The Washington Post and the US Attorney for DC are selective in who they go after. Local officials and candidates supported by African Americans disproportionately find themselves in the cross-hairs. Meanwhile more problematic instances of potential misuse of public funds go ignored when carried out by the Post’s allies (like Councilman Jack Evans). Well-intentioned activists may inadvertently legitimize this double standard by using the Post’s/US Attorney’s line of attack to further their own causes (i.e. Mayor Gray supports Walmart = Gray’s corrupt.) In this class we will critically look at DC corruption scandals and discuss how that impacts our work.
