Concepcion Picciotto & The Peace House DC EVICTED?!

Concepcion Picciotto & The Peace House DC EVICTED?!
December 10th, 2014
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

After a long battle within this court system trying to get The Peace House DC house up to code. December 10th, 2014 at 1 pm the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) will come to the Peace House to secure it; which means force us out.

The DCRA has decided to punish the us (the residence) for the landlords (Ellen Thomas) housing code violations. After sending violations to our landlord DCRA promised us that they would do “emergency repairs” by August 2014. Now after five (5) months of so-called “inspections” we are getting force out of residency. This includes Concepcion Picciotto; a 33-year peace and anti-nuclear activist who’s in her late 70’s early 80’s.

The inspector who initially filed the “Order to Vacate” was also involved with the closing down of Occupy DC’s McPherson Square. We believe that there was a prejudice in regards to tenancy and who the residences are.

We ask all media and supporters to be at The Peace House (1233 12th St. NW, Washington, DC 20005) by 1 pm, December 10th, 2014 to witness this incredibly unfair treatment of legal tenants.

Please note: We have been fighting this notice to vacate. We’ve even offered and have made repairs from our own funds. Just as a show of good faith because we’re not trying to lose this place that’s been embedded into the community for over 15 years.

The DCRA claims that our house, although about 60 degrees is considered inhabitable. Therefore forces residence to be dependent either on the system or become homeless in the middle of the winter. This is unacceptable!
